Joys & Rewards

If you decide to become a parent, you will probably have to learn to cope with pain, conflict, and sorrow. They are often part of the parenting experience. But you will also probably experience many joys and rewards. They are all possible regardless of our own experience with our own parents.

Here are some of the joys and rewards women and men say they receive by being parents — they

  • gain satisfaction with life
  • learn about themselves through their children
  • receive love and affection
  • find a creative outlet
  • feel they become “really” adult
  • discover a sense of achievement
  • fulfill their family values
  • fulfill their need for family
  • resolve issues of their own childhood
  • put their own lives into perspective
  • become better communicators
  • more deeply appreciate the past and future
  • have deeper understanding of other people
  • delight in physical contact with their children
  • delight in playing with their children
  • delight in witnessing their children develop skills
  • value companionship with their children
  • value the emotional closeness that can develop
  • delight in the happiness and laughter of children
  • delight in watching children develop independence and mature concern for others
